Major fires have long been a part of California and the West, but fires and the resulting smoke have increased in frequency and severity over the last decade. Fires over half a million acres have, unfortunately, become commonplace. The unhealthy smoke from these fires also impacts outdoor recreation and tourism in many destinations in the west. With no relief in sight, is fire changing tourism in the west? This paper looks at the trends and what DMOs can do in reaction to this potentially devastating impact.
